Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey




Hamilton Township is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The township is part of the New York metropolitan area as defined by the United States Census Bureau, but directly borders the Philadelphia metropolitan area and is part of the Federal Communications Commission's Philadelphia Designated Market Area. As of the 2020 United States Census, Hamilton Township had a population of 90,871, making it the 9th largest municipality in New Jersey.
History[edit]
Hamilton Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 11, 1842, from portions of the now-defunct Nottingham Township. Portions of the township have been taken to form Chambersburg borough (April 1, 1872, annexed by Trenton in 1888) and Bordentown Township (March 24, 1852).
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 40.387 square miles (104.602 km²), including 39.489 square miles (102.276 km²) of land and 0.898 square miles (2.326 km²) of water (2.22%).
Hamilton Township is bordered by the municipalities of Robbinsville Township, Trenton, West Windsor Township, Lawrence Township, and Bordentown Township in Mercer County; and Chesterfield Township, North Hanover Township, and East Windsor Township in neighboring counties.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 Census, there were 90,871 people, 34,393 households, and 23,255 families residing in the township. The population density was 2,303.3 per square mile (889.3/km²). There were 36,170 housing units at an average density of 916.8 per square mile (354.0/km²).
Government[edit]
The township is governed under the Mayor-Council system of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a Mayor and a Township Council comprising five members. Council members are elected at-large in partisan elections to serve four-year terms.
Education[edit]
Hamilton Township is served by the Hamilton Township School District, which serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district is one of the largest in New Jersey, with numerous elementary, middle, and high schools.
Transportation[edit]
The township is crisscrossed by several major roads and highways, including Interstate 195, U.S. Route 130, and New Jersey Route 33, among others. It is also served by NJ Transit at the Hamilton station, providing commuter rail service to New York City and Philadelphia.
Economy[edit]
Hamilton Township has a diverse economy with a mix of retail, manufacturing, and service industries. The township is home to the Hamilton Marketplace, a large retail complex, and several industrial parks.
Parks and Recreation[edit]
The township offers a variety of parks and recreational facilities, including Veterans Park, one of the largest municipal parks in New Jersey. It also hosts the Grounds For Sculpture, a 42-acre sculpture park and museum.

Several notable individuals hail from Hamilton Township, including Chris Smith, a member of the United States House of Representatives.
