Haim Ginott
Haim Ginott (1922–1973) was a school teacher, a child psychologist and psychotherapist, and a parent educator. He pioneered techniques for conversing with children that are still taught today. His book, Between Parent and Child, stayed on the best seller list for over a year and is still popular today.
Early Life and Education
Haim Ginott was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1922. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he received a degree in psychology. He then moved to the United States to further his studies, earning a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Columbia University.
Career
Ginott began his career as an elementary school teacher in Israel. After moving to the United States, he worked as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. He also served as a professor of psychology at the New York University.
Ginott is best known for his work in parent-child communication. He developed a unique approach that emphasized empathetic listening and respectful communication. His techniques are still widely used in parenting and teaching.
Publications
Ginott's most famous book, Between Parent and Child, was first published in 1965. The book offers practical advice for parents on how to communicate with their children. It has been translated into more than 30 languages and remains a best-seller.
He also authored Teacher and Child which applies his communication techniques to the classroom. This book has been influential in shaping modern teaching methods.
Legacy
Ginott's work has had a lasting impact on the fields of parenting and education. His communication techniques are still taught in parenting classes and teacher training programs around the world. His books continue to be widely read and his ideas continue to influence how we interact with children.
