HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)

HVAC (pronounced as H-V-A-C, /ˈeɪtʃviːeɪsiː/), is an acronym that stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. The term is primarily used to describe the mechanical systems that heat, cool, and ventilate a building.

Etymology

The term HVAC originated in the early 20th century when advances in mechanical engineering led to the development of integrated heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. The acronym stands for the three main functions of a system: Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning.

Heating

Heating is the process of increasing the temperature in an enclosed space to create a comfortable and warm environment. This is typically achieved through the use of furnaces, heat pumps, and boilers.

Ventilation

Ventilation is the process of exchanging or replacing air in any space to provide high indoor air quality. This involves temperature control, oxygen replenishment, and removal of moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, and carbon dioxide.

Air Conditioning

Air Conditioning is the process of removing heat and moisture from the interior of an occupied space to improve the comfort of occupants. Air conditioning can be used in both domestic and commercial environments.

Related Terms

  • Thermostat: A device that automatically regulates temperature, or activates a device when the temperature reaches a certain point.
  • Ductwork: The system of ducts used for the delivery of air in HVAC systems.
  • Refrigerant: A substance or mixture used in a heat pump and refrigeration cycle. Most of the times, the refrigerant is a fluid that transitions from a gas to a liquid and back again at varying temperatures.
  • HVAC Control System: A system that regulates the operational functions of an HVAC system.
