HLA-DR17

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

HLA-DR17 is a human leukocyte antigen serotype within the HLA-DR serotype group. The serotype is determined by the antibody recognition of β-subunit of HLA-DR. This β-subunit is encoded by HLA-DRB1 gene. HLA-DR17 is a split antigen of the broad antigen HLA-DR2, and it is predominantly found in individuals of Asian descent.

Function

HLA-DR17, like other HLA-DR antigens, plays a crucial role in the immune system. It is involved in the presentation of peptides (derived from extracellular proteins) to the T cells, a process that is essential for the activation of T cells and the subsequent immune response.

Association with Diseases

HLA-DR17 has been associated with several autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also linked to certain types of cancer, such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma and leukemia.

Genetic Linkage

HLA-DR17 is linked to other HLA-DR serotypes, including HLA-DR51, HLA-DR52, and HLA-DR53. These serotypes are encoded by different HLA-DRB genes and are often inherited together as a haplotype.
