HLA-DQ3

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

HLA-DQ3 is a serotype group within the larger HLA-DQ serotype system. The HLA-DQ3 serotype group encompasses the HLA-DQ7, HLA-DQ8, and HLA-DQ9 serotypes. The HLA-DQ3 serotype group is associated with several autoimmune diseases, including celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Structure and Function[edit]

HLA-DQ3 is a cell surface receptor protein found on antigen-presenting cells. It is involved in the immune system's response to foreign substances. HLA-DQ3 is a heterodimer, consisting of an α-chain (DQA1) and a β-chain (DQB1). These chains are encoded by genes located in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) region on chromosome 6.

Disease Associations[edit]

HLA-DQ3 is associated with a number of autoimmune diseases.

Celiac Disease[edit]

HLA-DQ3, specifically the DQ8 serotype, is associated with celiac disease. Approximately 90% of celiac disease patients carry either HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8.

Type 1 Diabetes[edit]

HLA-DQ3, particularly the DQ8 serotype, is also associated with an increased risk of type 1 diabetes.

Rheumatoid Arthritis[edit]

HLA-DQ3 is associated with a decreased risk of rheumatoid arthritis. This is in contrast to other HLA-DQ serotypes, which are generally associated with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis.
