HIV/AIDS in India (pronunciation: /ˌeɪtʃaɪˈviː/ /ˈeɪdz/ in /ˈɪndiə/) is a significant public health issue. The term HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which is a virus that attacks the immune system. AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.
Etymology
The term HIV is an acronym derived from the English words 'Human Immunodeficiency Virus'. AIDS is also an acronym, standing for 'Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome'. The term 'India' is derived from the Indus, which is derived from the Old Persian word Hinduš.
Epidemiology
India has the third largest HIV epidemic in the world, with 2.1 million people living with HIV. The Indian epidemic is concentrated among key affected populations including sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, and injecting drug users.
Prevention and Treatment
The Indian government has made significant efforts to prevent and control HIV/AIDS through the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). NACO provides comprehensive prevention, care, support and treatment services to people living with HIV/AIDS.
