HEPA

HEPA (pronounced /ˈhɛpə/), an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air, is a type of air filter. Filters meeting the HEPA standard have many applications, including use in medical facilities, automobiles, aircraft and homes.

Etymology

The term HEPA was first used in the 1950s, derived from the phrase High Efficiency Particulate Air. The term became a registered trademark and later a generic term for highly efficient filters.

Definition

HEPA filters are composed of a mat of randomly arranged fibres. The fibres are typically composed of fiberglass and possess diameters between 0.5 and 2.0 micrometers. Key factors affecting function are fibre diameter, filter thickness, and face velocity.

Applications

HEPA filters are used in various applications, such as medical facilities, automobiles, aircraft and homes. In medical facilities, they are used to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria and viruses. In automobiles and aircraft, they are used to ensure the cleanliness of the air inside. In homes, they are used in vacuum cleaners to reduce dust and allergen levels.
