Guitar

Guitar (/ɡɪˈtɑːr/; Spanish: [ɡiˈtaɾ]) is a string instrument usually having six strings. It is typically played with both hands by strumming or plucking the strings with either a guitar pick or the fingers/fingernails of one hand, while simultaneously pressing selected strings against frets with the fingers of the other hand.

Etymology

The word guitar was adopted into English from the Spanish word guitarra in the 1600s. In the Middle Ages the word gitter or gittern was used in England. Both guitarra and gitter came from the Latin word cithara. The word cithara came from the earlier Greek word kithara.
