Guided Tissue Regeneration

Guided Tissue Regeneration (pronunciation: gahy-ded tish-oo ree-juh-ney-shuhn) is a surgical procedure that uses a barrier membrane inserted between the soft tissue and bone in order to allow the growth of new periodontal ligament and alveolar bone.

Etymology

The term "Guided Tissue Regeneration" is derived from the process it describes. "Guided" refers to the direction of growth being controlled or guided, "Tissue" refers to the biological material being regenerated, and "Regeneration" refers to the process of regrowth or renewal.

Procedure

The procedure involves the use of a barrier membrane to prevent the faster-growing epithelial tissue from migrating into a wound or defect, allowing the slower-growing bone and ligament cells to populate the area. This technique is often used in periodontics and oral surgery to regenerate lost bone and ligament tissue and to treat periodontal disease.
