The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (Bolshaya Sovetskaya Entsiklopediya, or Большая советская энциклопедия) is one of the most comprehensive and authoritative encyclopedias in the world. It was published by the Soviet Union from 1926 to 1990.

Etymology
The term "Great Soviet Encyclopedia" is a direct translation of the Russian term "Bolshaya Sovetskaya Entsiklopediya". "Bolshaya" means "great" or "large", "Sovetskaya" means "Soviet", and "Entsiklopediya" is the Russian term for "encyclopedia".
