Born in Vadamalapuram, Tamil Nadu, Venkataswamy, often referred to as "Dr. V," overcame his physical limitations due to rheumatoid arthritis to become a renowned eye surgeon. He served as a professor at the Government Madurai Medical College and as the head of its Department of Ophthalmology. Upon his retirement in 1976, at the age of 58, Dr. V founded the Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai with a modest 11 beds.
