The Government of Lagos State (pronunciation: /ˈlɑːɡoʊs/), is the political body responsible for the administration of Lagos State, one of the 36 states of Nigeria.
Etymology
The name "Lagos" is a Portuguese word which means "lakes". The Portuguese were the first European settlers to arrive in the area, in the 15th century, and named the settlement after the geographical feature that most impressed them.
Structure
The Government of Lagos State is structured into three distinct arms: the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary. Each arm is independent of the other, but they work together to ensure the smooth running of the state.
Executive
The Executive arm of the Government of Lagos State is headed by the Governor of Lagos State. The Governor is the chief executive of the state and is responsible for the implementation of laws and policies enacted by the Legislature. The Governor is assisted by the Deputy Governor and the State Executive Council, which is made up of Commissioners and Special Advisers.
Legislature
The Legislature is the law-making arm of the Government of Lagos State. It is known as the Lagos State House of Assembly and is made up of elected representatives from each of the local government areas in the state. The House of Assembly is responsible for making laws for the peace, order, and good governance of Lagos State.
Judiciary
The Judiciary is the arm of the Government of Lagos State responsible for the interpretation of laws. It is headed by the Chief Judge of Lagos State. The Judiciary ensures that justice is served and that the rule of law is upheld in the state.
