United States Government Publishing Office
The United States Government Publishing Office (GPO) is an agency of the legislative branch of the United States federal government. The GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the Federal Government, including the official publications of Congress, the White House, and other federal agencies.
History
The GPO was established by an act of Congress on June 23, 1860, and began operations on March 4, 1861. It was originally known as the Government Printing Office. The name was changed to the Government Publishing Office in 2014 to better reflect the agency's modern role in providing digital as well as print publications.
Functions
The GPO's primary function is to ensure that the public has access to government information. It accomplishes this through the production and distribution of a wide range of publications, including the Federal Register, the Code of Federal Regulations, the Congressional Record, and the United States Code. The GPO also provides secure credentialing services, including the production of U.S. passports.
Digital Services
In addition to traditional printing services, the GPO offers a variety of digital services. The agency operates the govinfo website, which provides free public access to official publications from all three branches of the federal government. The GPO also offers eBook services and digital publishing solutions for federal agencies.
Organizational Structure
The GPO is headed by the Public Printer of the United States, who is appointed by the President of the United States with the advice and consent of the United States Senate. The Public Printer oversees the agency's operations and ensures that it fulfills its mission of keeping America informed.
