Governance
Governance
Governance (pronunciation: /ˈɡʌvərnəns/) is a term that refers to the processes and structures by which an organization or society operates.
Etymology
The term "governance" originates from the Greek word "kubernáo" which means to steer and was used to refer to the act of piloting a ship. The Latin version of this word, "gubernare," was later adopted into Old French as "governer," which then became "govern" in English.
Definition
Governance involves the establishment of policies, and continuous monitoring of their proper implementation, by the members of the governing body of an organization. It includes the mechanisms required to balance the powers of the members (with the associated accountability), and their primary duty of enhancing the prosperity and viability of the organization.
