Gourmet (/ɡɔːrˈmeɪ/; from French gourmet, from Old French grommes, likely originally gros homme, "big man") is a cultural ideal associated with the culinary arts of fine food and drink, or haute cuisine, which is characterized by refined, even elaborate preparations and presentations of aesthetically balanced meals of several contrasting, often quite rich courses.
Etymology
The term and its associated practices are usually used positively to describe people of refined taste and passion. The French word gourmet has come into use in the English language in the late 19th century. The word has its roots in the Old French grommes, which is believed to have been originally used to refer to a wine broker or a member of the wine merchants' guild. This is derived from the Medieval Latin word gromus, which means a servant who tasted wine for his master, to ensure it was not poisoned.
