Goldriesling
A white grape variety used in wine production
Goldriesling is a white grape variety primarily grown in the Saxony region of Germany. It is known for its aromatic qualities and is used in the production of white wine.
History
Goldriesling was developed in the early 20th century by the German viticulturist Christian Oberlin. It is a cross between the Riesling and Courtillier Musqué (also known as Muscat Précoce de Saumur) grape varieties. The aim was to create a grape that combined the aromatic qualities of Muscat with the hardiness and acidity of Riesling.
Viticulture
Goldriesling is a relatively early-ripening grape variety, which makes it suitable for cultivation in cooler climates. It is primarily grown in the Saxony region, particularly in the Elbe Valley, where the climate is conducive to its growth. The grape is known for its resistance to common vine diseases, although it can be susceptible to frost damage due to its early budding.
Wine Characteristics
Wines made from Goldriesling grapes are typically light and aromatic, with floral and fruity notes. The wines often exhibit flavors of citrus, peach, and apricot, with a hint of spice. They are usually consumed young and are appreciated for their refreshing acidity and delicate bouquet.
Production Regions
While Goldriesling is primarily associated with the Saxony region, it is also grown in small quantities in other parts of Germany. The grape's adaptability to cooler climates has sparked interest in other wine-producing regions with similar conditions.
Related Varieties
Goldriesling is related to several other grape varieties through its parentage. Its Riesling parent is one of the most famous and widely grown white grape varieties in the world, known for its versatility and ability to produce wines ranging from dry to sweet. The Muscat family, to which its other parent belongs, is renowned for its aromatic qualities and is used in a variety of wine styles.
