Glenkinchie Distillery1

Glenkinchie Distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the village of Pencaitland, in East Lothian, Scotland. It is one of the six distilleries in the Lowland whisky region.

History

The distillery was founded in 1825 by brothers John and George Rate. Originally named the Milton Distillery, it was later renamed Glenkinchie in 1837. The distillery experienced several changes in ownership and periods of closure throughout its history. In 1914, it became part of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), which later became part of Diageo.

Production

Glenkinchie Distillery sources its water from the Lammermuir Hills. The distillery uses traditional methods of whisky production, including the use of copper pot stills. The distillery has a mash tun, washbacks, and two pot stills, one wash still and one spirit still. The whisky is aged in oak casks, primarily ex-bourbon barrels, which impart unique flavors to the final product.

Visitor Centre

Glenkinchie Distillery has a visitor centre that offers guided tours, tastings, and a museum that showcases the history of whisky production in the Lowlands. The distillery is part of the Scotch Whisky Experience, a popular tourist attraction in Edinburgh.

Products

Glenkinchie produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the Glenkinchie 12 Year Old and various limited edition releases. The distillery's whiskies are known for their light, floral, and slightly sweet character, typical of Lowland malts.
