Glanuloplasty

Glanuloplasty (pronunciation: /ˈɡlæn.jʊ.ləˌplæs.ti/) is a surgical procedure that involves the reconstruction or reshaping of the glans penis.

Etymology

The term "Glanuloplasty" is derived from the Greek words "glans" meaning "acorn", referring to the shape of the glans penis, and "plasty" meaning "molding or formation".

Procedure

In a Glanuloplasty, the surgeon reshapes the glans penis to correct deformities or to enhance its appearance. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with other surgeries such as phalloplasty or metoidioplasty, which are procedures to construct a neophallus in transgender men or in men with congenital or acquired penile absence.

Indications

Glanuloplasty is indicated in cases of congenital or acquired abnormalities of the glans penis, such as hypospadias or epispadias, and in gender affirming surgeries for transgender men. It may also be performed for cosmetic reasons.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, Glanuloplasty carries potential risks and complications. These may include infection, bleeding, scarring, and changes in sensation. Specific to Glanuloplasty, there may be dissatisfaction with the cosmetic result or functional issues such as difficulty with urination or sexual function.
