Gilead Sciences, Inc. is an American biopharmaceutical company that researches, develops, and commercializes drugs. The company focuses primarily on antiviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and influenza, including Harvoni and Sovaldi.

History

Gilead Sciences was founded in 1987 by Michael L. Riordan, a medical doctor. The company was originally named Oligogen, Inc. and was later renamed Gilead Sciences. Gilead's first product, Vistide (cidofovir), was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS.
