Gesang Martohartono
Gesang Martohartono (1 October 1917 – 20 May 2010) was an Indonesian singer and songwriter who is best known for his composition "Bengawan Solo," a song that has become iconic in Indonesia and internationally, especially in Japan. Born in Surakarta, also known as Solo, Gesang was largely a self-taught musician, having developed his skills in music without formal education. His contribution to Indonesian music, particularly in the genre of kroncong, has earned him a legendary status.
Early Life
Gesang Martohartono was born in the kampong of Dukuh Menanggal in the city of Surakarta, Central Java. His interest in music began at an early age, and he was particularly drawn to the kroncong style, a type of Indonesian music that was influenced by Portuguese fados. Despite his lack of formal musical education, Gesang showed an extraordinary talent in music, especially in singing and songwriting.
Career
Gesang's career took a significant turn in 1940 when he composed "Bengawan Solo," a song inspired by the longest river in Java, the Solo River. The song was written during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia and quickly gained popularity for its melancholic melody and lyrical depiction of the landscape and life along the river. "Bengawan Solo" has been translated into numerous languages and covered by many artists around the world.
In addition to "Bengawan Solo," Gesang wrote over 200 songs, many of which remain popular in Indonesia. His music is characterized by its simplicity and emotional depth, often reflecting the beauty of nature and the complexities of human emotion.
Legacy
Gesang Martohartono's contribution to Indonesian music was recognized by the Indonesian government and various cultural organizations. He received several awards and honors for his work, including the prestigious Cultural Merit Order from the Indonesian government. Gesang's home in Surakarta has been turned into a museum, preserving his legacy and offering insights into his life and work.
Gesang's influence extends beyond Indonesia, with "Bengawan Solo" being particularly celebrated in Japan, where it is widely known and loved. The song's universal appeal and Gesang's distinctive style have made him an important figure in the world of music.
Death
Gesang Martohartono passed away on 20 May 2010 in Surakarta at the age of 92. His death marked the end of an era in Indonesian music, but his songs, especially "Bengawan Solo," continue to resonate with audiences in Indonesia and around the world.
