GeneCards

GeneCards (/dʒiːnˈkɑːrdz/) is a comprehensive, searchable compendium of human genes that provides concise genomic, proteomic, transcriptomic, genetic and functional information on all known and predicted human genes.

Etymology

The term "GeneCards" is a combination of the words "gene", which refers to a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring, and "cards", which refers to the database-like structure of the resource, where each gene has its own "card" or entry.

Related Terms

  • Genomics: The study of the genomes of organisms. In the context of GeneCards, genomics refers to the comprehensive data provided about each human gene.
  • Proteomics: The large-scale study of proteins. GeneCards provides proteomic data for each human gene.
  • Transcriptomics: The study of the transcriptome, the complete set of RNA transcripts that are produced by the genome. GeneCards includes transcriptomic data for each human gene.
  • Genetics: The study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms. GeneCards is a resource used in genetic research.
  • Functional Genomics: The field of genetics that attempts to describe gene (and protein) functions and interactions. GeneCards provides functional information on all known and predicted human genes.
