The Garrick Club was founded in 1831 by a group of literary and theatrical figures, including the actor David Garrick, after whom the club is named. The club was established to provide a place where actors and men of letters could meet on equal terms. The founding members included Charles Kemble, Thomas Talfourd, and Samuel James Arnold.

The club's first premises were in King Street, Covent Garden, and it moved to its current location at 15 Garrick Street in 1864. The building was designed by the architect Samuel Beazley, who was also a playwright and a member of the club.
