British breakfast television program

GMTV (originally an abbreviation for Good Morning Television) was a national breakfast television broadcaster in the United Kingdom. It was broadcast on the ITV network from 1 January 1993 to 3 September 2010. The program was produced by ITV Breakfast, a subsidiary of ITV plc.

History

GMTV was launched on 1 January 1993, replacing the previous breakfast television franchise holder, TV-am. The program was initially a joint venture between Granada Television, LWT, Central Independent Television, and Scottish Television. Over time, the ownership structure changed, and by 2009, ITV plc had acquired full control of GMTV.

Format

GMTV's format included a mix of news, entertainment, weather, and interviews. The program was divided into segments, with the early part of the show focusing on news and current affairs, while the later segments included lighter content such as celebrity interviews and lifestyle features.

Presenters

Throughout its run, GMTV featured a variety of presenters, including Eamonn Holmes, Fiona Phillips, Lorraine Kelly, and Ben Shephard. The presenters played a significant role in the show's popularity, with many becoming household names in the UK.

Replacement

On 6 September 2010, GMTV was replaced by a new breakfast program, Daybreak. The change was part of a rebranding effort by ITV plc to refresh its breakfast television offering. Daybreak itself was later replaced by Good Morning Britain in 2014.

Legacy

GMTV remains a significant part of British television history, remembered for its contribution to breakfast television and its role in shaping the format of morning shows in the UK.
