French Polynesia
French Polynesia (pronunciation: /ˈfrɛntʃ pɒlɪˈniːʒə/) is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic and its sole overseas country. It is composed of 118 geographically dispersed islands and atolls stretching over more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) in the South Pacific Ocean.
Etymology
The name "French Polynesia" is derived from the French France and the Greek word Polynesia which means "many islands".
Geography
French Polynesia is made up of several groups of Polynesian islands, the most famous island being Tahiti in the Society Islands group, which is also the most populous island and the seat of the capital of the territory (Pape'ete).
History
The French first established a colony on the islands in the mid-19th century. The territory was annexed by France in 1880.
Health Care
Health care in French Polynesia is universal and compulsory. The health care system is funded by the government through a system of social security. The main hospital is the Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie Française in Pape'ete.
