freezing eggs - (pronounced) (. . . FREE-zing) The process of freezing one or more unfertilized ova (ova that have not been combined with sperm) in order to preserve them for future use. The eggs are thawed and fertilized in the laboratory to produce embryos that can be placed in a woman's uterus. Egg freezing is being studied as a way of fertility preservation. It may be useful for women with cancer who want to have children after undergoing radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or certain types of surgery that can lead to infertility. Also called egg bank, oocyte cryopreservation and oocyte cryopreservation
