Free content

Free content (pronounced: /friː ˈkɒntɛnt/), also known as libre content or open content, is any kind of functional work, artwork, or other creative content that meets the definition of a free cultural work.

Etymology

The term "free content" was coined in the late 1990s as a response to the restrictions placed on content by copyright laws. The word "free" in this context refers not to price, but to the freedom to use, modify, and distribute the content. The term "libre" is derived from the Latin word "liber", which means "free" or "unrestricted". The term "open content" is used synonymously and was popularized by the Open Content Project.

Definition

Free content is content that can be freely used, copied, and modified by anyone, for any purpose, without requiring permission from or payment to the original creator or copyright holder. This is in contrast to proprietary content, which is controlled by the copyright holder and cannot be used or modified without their permission. Free content includes all works in the public domain and works released under a free license, such as the Creative Commons licenses.
