Dutch Golden Age painter

Frans Hals (c. 1582/1583 – 26 August 1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, notable for his loose painterly brushwork. He is best known for his portraits, which vividly capture the character and vitality of his subjects.

Early life

Frans Hals was born in Antwerp, in the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium). His family moved to Haarlem in the Dutch Republic when he was young. Hals studied under Karel van Mander, a Mannerist painter and writer, who had a significant influence on his early work.

Career

Hals became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1610. His early works include group portraits and individual portraits, which were highly sought after by the wealthy citizens of Haarlem. Hals' style is characterized by a lively, loose brushwork that conveys a sense of spontaneity and immediacy.
