Forensic Odontology (pronunciation: /fəˈrɛnsɪk ɒdɒnˈtɒlədʒi/) is a specialized branch of dentistry that deals with the application of dental knowledge to legal issues.

Etymology

The term "Forensic Odontology" is derived from the Latin word "forensis" which means "of or before the forum" and the Greek word "odous" which means "tooth".

Overview

Forensic odontology is used for identification of unknown remains through dental records, estimation of age, sex, and race, analysis of bite marks and oral injuries, and presentation of dental findings in court. It plays a crucial role in the identification of victims in mass disasters, child abuse cases, and cases of elder abuse.
