The Foot (plural feet; symbol: ft; abbreviation: ft.; IPA: /fʊt/) is a unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems of measurement.
Etymology
The term "foot" originates from the human foot, which was a common unit of measurement in many cultures. The length of the foot was often defined as the length of a man's foot, or as the length of a foot-shaped wooden or metal measure.
Definition
Since 1959, both the United States and the United Kingdom have defined the foot as exactly 0.3048 metres. This definition was agreed upon internationally in order to provide a standardized unit of measurement for scientific, engineering, and commercial purposes.
