Foodland Hawaii
Foodland Hawaii is a prominent chain of grocery stores located in the state of Hawaii, United States. Established in 1948, it holds the distinction of being Hawaii's first modern supermarket chain. The company is privately owned and operates under the parent company, Sullivan Family of Companies.
History
Foodland was founded by Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan, an Irish immigrant who moved to Hawaii in the 1930s. The first Foodland store opened on May 6, 1948, in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. This store was the first of its kind in Hawaii, offering a self-service grocery shopping experience that was new to the islands at the time.
Over the years, Foodland expanded its presence across the Hawaiian Islands, opening additional locations on Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island of Hawaii. The company has remained family-owned and continues to be a significant player in Hawaii's retail grocery market.
Operations
Foodland Hawaii operates 32 stores across the state, including its flagship brand Foodland, as well as Foodland Farms and Sack N Save. Each store is tailored to meet the needs of its local community, offering a wide range of products including fresh produce, meats, seafood, and local Hawaiian specialties.
The company is known for its commitment to supporting local farmers and producers, often featuring locally sourced products in its stores. Foodland also offers a variety of prepared foods and deli items, catering to the diverse culinary tastes of Hawaii's population.
Community Involvement
Foodland is deeply involved in the local community, supporting various charitable initiatives and events. The company runs an annual "Give Aloha" program, which encourages customers to donate to local non-profit organizations at checkout. Foodland matches a portion of these donations, amplifying the impact of the community's generosity.
Loyalty Program
Foodland offers a loyalty program called Maika'i, which provides customers with discounts and special offers. Members of the Maika'i program earn points for every purchase, which can be redeemed for discounts on future shopping trips.
Challenges and Adaptations
Like many retailers, Foodland has faced challenges due to economic fluctuations and the impact of global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has adapted by enhancing its online presence and offering delivery and curbside pickup services to meet changing consumer needs.
