Food Standards Agency

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) (pronunciation: /fuːd ˈstændərdz ˈeɪdʒənsi/) is a non-ministerial government department of the Government of the United Kingdom. It is responsible for protecting public health in relation to food in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is led by a board appointed to act in the public interest.

Etymology

The term "Food Standards Agency" is self-explanatory, with "Food" referring to the substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body, "Standards" indicating a level of quality or attainment, and "Agency" signifying a business or organization providing a particular service.

History

The Food Standards Agency was established in 2000 by the UK government in response to various food crises in the 1990s. Its founding was intended to restore public trust in the country's food safety.
