Focused ultrasound (pronounced: FOH-kusd UL-truh-sound) is a non-invasive therapeutic technology with the potential to transform the treatment of many medical disorders by using ultrasonic energy to target tissue deep in the body without incisions or radiation.
Etymology
The term "focused ultrasound" is derived from the technology's unique ability to focus sound waves in a targeted area, much like how a magnifying glass can focus light. "Ultrasound" comes from the Latin words "ultra" (beyond) and "sonus" (sound), referring to sound waves with frequencies higher than those audible to humans.
