The flag of Vanuatu was adopted on 18 February 1980. It consists of a horizontal bicolor of red and green with a black chevron bordered in yellow containing a boar's tusk encircling two crossed namele leaves in the hoist.

Design

The flag's design and colors carry cultural, political, and regional meanings. The red represents the blood of wild boars and men, the green symbolizes the richness of the islands, and the black signifies the ni-Vanuatu people. The yellow Y-shape represents the light of the Gospel spreading through the islands. The boar's tusk is a symbol of prosperity, and the namele leaves are a symbol of peace.

History

The flag was designed by Kalontas Malon and was officially adopted on 18 February 1980, shortly before Vanuatu gained independence from the United Kingdom and France on 30 July 1980. The design was chosen through a national competition.
