Fisher House Foundation

The Fisher House Foundation (pronounced: /ˈfɪʃər haʊs faʊnˈdeɪʃən/) is a not-for-profit organization established in the United States. The foundation is dedicated to providing free or low-cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers.

Etymology

The Fisher House Foundation is named after its founders, Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher. The Fishers were philanthropists who had a long history of supporting military and veteran causes.

History

The Fisher House Foundation was established in 1990 by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher. The first Fisher House was opened in 1991 at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Since then, the foundation has built over 70 houses in the United States and Europe.

Services

The Fisher House Foundation provides "comfort homes" where military and veterans' families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve.
