File management application for macOS

Finder is the default file manager and graphical user interface shell used on all macOS operating systems. It is responsible for the overall user-management of files, disks, and network volumes, and is the first application a user interacts with after logging into the system. Finder is an integral part of the Aqua user interface.

History[edit]

Finder was introduced with the first Macintosh computer, which was released on January 24, 1984. It has undergone numerous revisions and redesigns since its inception, evolving alongside the macOS operating system.

Features[edit]

Finder provides several key features, including:

  • File Management: Users can create, delete, move, and copy files and folders.
  • Search Functionality: Finder includes a search bar that allows users to search for files and folders.
  • Tags: Users can tag files with different colors and labels for easier organization.
  • Sidebar: A customizable sidebar provides quick access to frequently used folders, devices, and tags.
  • iCloud Integration: Finder integrates with iCloud, allowing users to store and access files across multiple Apple devices.
  • Quick Look: This feature allows users to preview the contents of a file without opening it in an application.

Interface[edit]

The Finder interface includes several components:

  • Desktop: The main workspace where users can place files, folders, and application shortcuts.
  • Menu Bar: Located at the top of the screen, it provides access to system-wide menus and application-specific menus.
  • Dock: A bar at the bottom of the screen that provides quick access to frequently used applications, files, and folders.
  • Windows: Finder windows display the contents of folders and provide tools for navigating the file system.

Customization[edit]

Finder can be customized in various ways to suit user preferences:

  • View Options: Users can choose from different view options, such as icon view, list view, column view, and gallery view.
  • Toolbar: The toolbar can be customized to include different buttons and tools.
  • Preferences: Finder preferences allow users to configure settings such as default folder views, sidebar items, and file extensions.
