After the fall of Roman Empire, the city was highly reduced in extension, but since the 11th century it begun to grow again due to the powerful maritime dominion. Water has been considerably reduced in the centuries, but the river Auser (on the north) is still navigable with barges. The south part of the city (south of river Arno) wasn't actually the city, but a satellite town for commerce. Dopo la caduta dell'Impero Romano, la città si ridusse notevolmente in estensione, ma a partire dal XI secolo iniziò nuovamente a crescere dovuto al potente dominio sui mari. Le acque si ridussero notevolmente nei secoli, ma il fiume Auser (a nord) è ancora navigabile con le chiatte. La parte a sud della città (a sud del fiume Arno) non era veramente la città, ma un paese satellite per il solo commercio. La parte nord era circondata da mura. |
