English: Detail of MICROTIA (outer ear deformity). Subject is photographer's son Gage, age 8 months at time of photo. Gage exhibits a Level-III microtia (the most common) on his left side, with no ear canal visible from external. Testing has proven aural nerve intact, meaning he can hear on this side. Right ear is normal. Gage was diagnosed high functioning autistic (HFA) at age 4. Gage is now 20 years of age (2025) and has declined surgery. He does not use any hearing assistance. He currently transcribes music by ear, can identify any note played, and tunes pianos with hopes of making it a career.
