Field goal
Field Goal[edit]
A field goal is a scoring play in several sports, most notably in American football, Canadian football, and basketball. The term refers to a method of scoring points by kicking or shooting the ball through the opponent's goal. The specifics of a field goal vary depending on the sport.
American Football[edit]
In American football, a field goal is a scoring play where the ball is place-kicked or drop-kicked through the opponent's goalposts. A successful field goal is worth three points. Field goals are typically attempted on fourth down when a team is within range of the goalposts but not close enough to attempt a touchdown.
Execution[edit]
To execute a field goal, the team lines up in a formation with the kicker, holder, and long snapper. The long snapper snaps the ball to the holder, who places it on the ground for the kicker. The kicker then attempts to kick the ball through the uprights of the goalpost.
Strategy[edit]
Field goals are often attempted in situations where a team is close to the end zone but unable to score a touchdown. Coaches must decide whether to attempt a field goal, go for a touchdown, or punt the ball based on the distance, game situation, and kicker's ability.
Canadian Football[edit]
In Canadian football, the rules for field goals are similar to those in American football, with a few differences due to the larger field and different scoring system. A field goal is also worth three points in Canadian football.
Basketball[edit]
In basketball, a field goal refers to any basket scored from the field during play, except for free throws. Field goals can be worth two or three points, depending on the distance from which the shot is taken.
Types of Field Goals[edit]
- Two-point field goal: A shot made from inside the three-point line.
- Three-point field goal: A shot made from beyond the three-point line.
Importance[edit]
Field goals are a critical component of basketball scoring and strategy. Teams often design plays to create open shots for high-percentage field goals.
