Fenpiprane

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Fenpiprane

Fenpiprane is a pharmacological agent that belongs to the class of drugs known as antitussives. It is primarily used in the treatment of cough and other related conditions.

Pharmacology

Fenpiprane acts by suppressing the cough reflex through a direct effect on the cough center in the medulla. It is considered a peripheral antitussive, as it does not have the central nervous system effects associated with other drugs in this class.

Medical Uses

Fenpiprane is used in the treatment of non-productive cough, such as those associated with common cold and influenza. It can also be used in the management of coughs related to chronic conditions such as chronic bronchitis and asthma.

Side Effects

Like all drugs, Fenpiprane can cause side effects. These may include drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as respiratory depression.

Contraindications

Fenpiprane is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug. It should also be used with caution in patients with respiratory insufficiency or those with a history of drug abuse.

Interactions

Fenpiprane may interact with other drugs, including other antitussives, sedatives, and antidepressants. It is always important to inform the healthcare provider of all the medications being taken to avoid potential drug interactions.
