Eye diseases

Eye diseases (/aɪ dɪˈziːz/) are disorders or conditions that affect the eye's structure, function, or both. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, aging, injury, and certain health conditions.

Etymology

The term "eye disease" is derived from the Old English "ēage" meaning "eye" and the Middle English "disease" meaning "lack of ease; trouble, sorrow; inconvenience, damage; sickness, illness; plague, pestilence."

Types of Eye Diseases

There are many types of eye diseases. Some of the most common include:

  • Cataract: A condition where the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque, resulting in blurred vision.
  • Glaucoma: A group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye.
  • Macular Degeneration: An eye disease that blurs the sharp, central vision needed for "straight-ahead" activities such as reading, sewing, and driving.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: A diabetes complication that affects eyes, caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina).
  • Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye, it is an inflammation or infection of the outer membrane of the eyeball and the inner eyelid.
