Extradition
Extradition (pronunciation: /ˌɛkstrəˈdɪʃ(ə)n/) is a formal process where one country or state surrenders a suspected or convicted criminal to another country or state.
Etymology
The term "extradition" derives from the Latin ex which means "out," and traditio which means "handing over" or "delivering."
Definition
Extradition is a legal procedure for the surrender of a person by a State to another State where that person is accused or convicted of a crime. The process is regulated by treaty and conducted between sovereign states.
Related Terms
- Extradition Treaty: An agreement between two countries to surrender to each other those persons who have been charged with or found guilty of an extraditable offense.
- Extraditable Offense: A crime for which a person can be surrendered from one country to another.
- Asylum: Protection granted by a nation to someone who has left their native country as a political refugee.

Extradition Process
The extradition process is initiated when a country requests the extradition of a person from another country. The request is usually made through diplomatic channels. The requested state will then determine whether the request complies with the extradition treaty and its domestic law. If the request is accepted, the person is then surrendered to the requesting state.
Extradition Laws
Extradition laws vary from country to country. Some countries, like France and Brazil, refuse to extradite their own citizens, while others, like the United States, will extradite their own citizens under certain circumstances.
