Expressive Aphasia

Expressive aphasia, also known as Broca's aphasia, is a type of aphasia characterized by partial loss of the ability to produce language (spoken, manual, or written), although comprehension generally remains intact.

Pronunciation

Expressive aphasia: /ɪkˈsprɛsɪv əˈfeɪʒə/

Etymology

The term "aphasia" comes from the Ancient Greek word "ἀφασία" (aphasía), meaning "speechlessness", derived from "ἄφατος" (áphatos), "speechless" from "ἀ-" (a-), "not, un" + "φημί" (phēmí), "I speak".

The term "expressive" comes from the Latin "expressivus", from "express-", past participle stem of "exprimere" meaning "to press out, express".

Definition

Expressive aphasia is a neurological disorder caused by damage to the Broca's area of the brain, typically in the left hemisphere, which is responsible for language production. Individuals with expressive aphasia have difficulty conveying their thoughts through speech or writing. They understand language much better than they are able to express it.

  • Difficulty forming complete sentences
  • Struggling to find the right words
  • Speaking in short phrases that make sense but are produced with great effort
  • Omitting small words such as "is", "and", and "the"
  • Problems with writing
