Exobasidium vaccinii-uliginosi

Exobasidium vaccinii-uliginosi is a species of fungus that belongs to the Exobasidium genus. It is commonly known as the bog blueberry-leaf red fungus. This fungus is known to infect the leaves of bog blueberry plants, causing distinct red discoloration and deformities on the leaves.

Description

Exobasidium vaccinii-uliginosi is a plant pathogen that primarily affects bog blueberry plants (Vaccinium uliginosum). The fungus infects the leaves of the plant, leading to the formation of red patches and abnormal growth. Infected leaves may exhibit curling, distortion, and thickening due to the presence of the fungus.

Life Cycle

The life cycle of Exobasidium vaccinii-uliginosi involves several stages. The fungus overwinters in infected plant tissues, such as fallen leaves or buds. In the spring, spores are released from these tissues and are dispersed by wind or rain. When the spores land on new host plants, they germinate and infect the leaves, initiating a new cycle of infection.

Symptoms

Infected bog blueberry plants show characteristic symptoms of Exobasidium vaccinii-uliginosi infection. These symptoms include red discoloration of the leaves, curling, and distortion. The affected leaves may also exhibit thickening and abnormal growth patterns. Severe infections can lead to reduced photosynthesis and overall plant health.

Management

Management of Exobasidium vaccinii-uliginosi involves cultural practices and, in some cases, chemical control. Pruning and removing infected plant parts can help reduce the spread of the fungus. Fungicides may be used preventatively to protect healthy plants from infection. Proper plant care, including adequate spacing and air circulation, can also help minimize the risk of infection.
