Evolutionary developmental biology
Evolutionary developmental biology (often abbreviated to evo-devo) is a field of biological research that compares the developmental processes of different organisms to infer the ancestral relationships between them and discover how developmental processes evolved.
Overview
The field of evolutionary developmental biology involves the study of developmental programs and patterns from an evolutionary perspective. It seeks to understand the various influences shaping the form and nature of life on Earth. Evo-devo has emerged as a bridge between the fields of biology, developmental biology, organismal biology, paleontology, genomics, and evolutionary biology.
History
The origins of evo-devo trace back to the 19th century with the work of Ernst Haeckel and his recapitulation theory. This theory proposed that an organism's development (or ontogeny) paralleled and summarized its species' evolutionary development (or phylogeny). However, modern evo-devo arose from the integration of genetics and developmental biology in the late 20th century, following the discovery of homeotic genes.
Key Concepts
Developmental Genetic Toolkit
The developmental genetic toolkit is a set of genes that control the development of organisms. They are highly conserved across different species, indicating their crucial role in the evolutionary process.
Modularity
Modularity refers to the concept that organisms and their traits can be broken down into distinct units (or modules), which can evolve independently of one another.
Deep Homology
Deep homology is the concept that dissimilar organs such as the human hand and the bat wing, can be traced back to common ancestral structures.
Research and Applications
Evo-devo research has broad applications, from understanding the origins of life to practical applications in medicine and agriculture. For example, it can help us understand the genetic basis of certain diseases, or how to breed crops more effectively.
