European Public Health Alliance

The European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) (pronunciation: /ˈjʊərəpiːən/ /ˈpʌblɪk/ /ˈhɛlθ/ /əˈlaɪəns/) is a non-profit organization that advocates for better public health in Europe, working to reduce health inequalities and promote health-enhancing policies.

Etymology

The term "European Public Health Alliance" is self-explanatory. It refers to a public health alliance that operates within the European region. The term "public health" is derived from the Latin "publicus," meaning "of the people," and "salus," meaning "health." An "alliance" is a union or association formed for mutual benefit, especially between countries or organizations, derived from the Old French "alier," meaning "to bind."

History

The European Public Health Alliance was established in 1993. It is a member-led organization made up of public health NGOs, patient groups, health professionals, and disease groups working to improve health and strengthen the voice of public health in Europe.
