Esther Lavelle Snyder (née Johnson; January 7, 1920 – August 4, 2006) was an American businesswoman who co-founded the fast food chain In-N-Out Burger with her husband, Harry Snyder, in 1948. She played a significant role in the development and expansion of the company, which has become a cultural icon in the Western United States.

Early Life

Esther Johnson was born on January 7, 1920, in Sorento, Illinois. She grew up in a modest family and later attended Seattle Pacific University, where she earned a degree in zoology. After completing her education, she worked as a nurse and a laboratory technician.

Founding of In-N-Out Burger

In 1948, Esther and her husband, Harry Snyder, opened the first In-N-Out Burger in Baldwin Park, California. The restaurant was one of the first drive-thru hamburger stands in California, allowing customers to place orders via a two-way speaker system. Esther was instrumental in managing the business operations, including maintaining quality control and overseeing the company's finances.

Role in Company Expansion

Under Esther's guidance, In-N-Out Burger expanded gradually, maintaining a focus on quality and customer service. She was known for her hands-on approach and commitment to the company's core values. After Harry Snyder's death in 1976, Esther continued to lead the company alongside her sons, Rich Snyder and Guy Snyder.

Legacy

Esther Snyder's dedication to quality and service helped establish In-N-Out Burger as a beloved brand with a loyal customer base. The company remains family-owned and operated, adhering to the principles she and Harry set forth. Esther passed away on August 4, 2006, in California, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the fast food industry.

Personal Life

Esther married Harry Snyder in 1948, and they had two sons, Rich and Guy. She was known for her strong Christian faith and philanthropic efforts, supporting various charitable organizations throughout her life.
