Eschatology

Eschatology (pronounced: es-ka-'tä-lə-jē) is a branch of Theology that is concerned with the final events in the history of the world or of humankind, a concept commonly referred to as the "end of the world" or "end times".

Etymology

The term "Eschatology" comes from two Greek words meaning "last" (ἔσχατος) and "study" (-λογία), and was first used in English around 1844.

  • Apocalypticism: The religious belief that there will be an apocalypse, a term which originally referred to a revelation of God's will, but now usually refers to belief that the world will come to an end very soon, even within one's own lifetime.
  • End Times: A future time-period described variously in the eschatologies of several world religions, which believe that world events will achieve a final climax.
  • Millenarianism: The belief by a religious, social, or political group or movement in a coming major transformation of society, after which all things will be changed, based on a one-thousand-year cycle.
  • Messianism: Belief in the advent of a messiah who acts as the savior or liberator of a group of people.
  • Resurrection: The concept of coming back to life after death.
  • Afterlife: The belief in some form of life after death.
  • Judgment Day: The final and eternal judgment by God of the people in every nation resulting in the glorification of some and the punishment of others.
  • Heaven: A common religious cosmological or transcendent supernatural place where beings such as gods, angels, spirits, saints, or venerated ancestors are said to originate, be enthroned, or live.
  • Hell: A location, in the afterlife, where wicked or unrighteous souls are punished.
  • Purgatory: An intermediate state after physical death for expiatory purification.
  • Prophecy: A message that is claimed by a prophet to have been communicated to them by a deity.
  • Revelation: The revealing or disclosing of some form of truth or knowledge through communication with a deity or other supernatural entity or entities.
