From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Erythrina lysistemon is a species of deciduous tree in the family Fabaceae, native to South Africa. Commonly known as the Common Coral Tree, Lucky Bean Tree, or Kaffir Boom, it is often used for its ornamental value in various landscapes.

Description

Erythrina lysistemon is a medium to large deciduous tree, reaching up to 12 meters in height. The tree is characterized by its bright red flowers, which bloom in the spring, and its thorny branches. The leaves are trifoliate, with a glossy dark green color. The bark is rough and dark grey. The tree produces large seed pods, which contain bright red seeds known as "lucky beans".

Distribution and Habitat

The Common Coral Tree is native to South Africa, where it is widely distributed in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country. It is typically found in woodland, grassland, and on rocky hillsides. The tree is also cultivated in other parts of the world for its ornamental value.

Uses

In addition to its ornamental use, Erythrina lysistemon has several other uses. The wood is soft and light, making it suitable for carving and furniture making. The bright red seeds are used in traditional African jewelry and are considered to bring good luck. The tree is also used in traditional medicine, with the bark and leaves used to treat various ailments.

Conservation

While the Common Coral Tree is not currently considered threatened, it is vulnerable to habitat loss due to urban development and agriculture. Conservation efforts are focused on preserving its natural habitat and promoting its cultivation in gardens and parks.
