Er:YAG laser

The Er:YAG laser (pronounced "er-yag laser") is a solid-state laser whose active laser medium is erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Er:Y3Al5O12).

Etymology

The name "Er:YAG laser" is derived from the elements used in its construction. "Er" stands for Erbium, a rare earth element used as the active laser medium. "YAG" stands for Yttrium Aluminium Garnet, which is the host crystal for the erbium.

Description

Er:YAG lasers typically emit light with a wavelength of 2940 nm, which is infrared light. This wavelength is highly absorbed in water, which makes the Er:YAG laser more suitable for applications that require precision without causing thermal damage.

Applications

Er:YAG lasers are commonly used in medical and dental procedures due to their ability to precisely remove thin layers of tissue. They are also used in dermatology for skin resurfacing and the treatment of acne scars.
