Epic Comics
Epic Comics was a comic book imprint of Marvel Comics that was established in 1982. It was created to provide a platform for more mature and creator-owned content, distinguishing itself from the mainstream superhero titles that Marvel was known for. The imprint allowed creators to retain ownership of their characters and stories, which was a significant departure from the traditional work-for-hire model prevalent in the comic book industry at the time.
History
Epic Comics was founded by Jim Shooter, who was the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics at the time. The imprint was part of the larger Epic Illustrated magazine, which also featured more mature and experimental content. The first title published under the Epic Comics imprint was Dreadstar by Jim Starlin, which debuted in 1982.
Notable Titles
Epic Comics published a variety of notable titles, including:
- Dreadstar by Jim Starlin
- The One by Rick Veitch
- Moonshadow by J.M. DeMatteis and Jon J Muth
- Marshal Law by Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill
- The Last American by John Wagner, Alan Grant, and Mike McMahon
Creator-Owned Content
One of the defining features of Epic Comics was its commitment to creator-owned content. This allowed writers and artists to maintain control over their intellectual property, which was a significant draw for many creators. This model was influential in the development of other creator-owned imprints and independent comic book publishers.
Legacy
Although Epic Comics ceased publication in the mid-1990s, its impact on the comic book industry was substantial. It paved the way for other mature and creator-owned imprints, such as Vertigo by DC Comics. Many of the titles and creators associated with Epic Comics have continued to be influential in the industry.
